1st year ceramic masks
Aim:
Through drawing, paper manipulation and ceramics, students will explore line and form to create a ceramic mask, inspired by Kimmy Cantrell, based on the theme of 'Distortion Portraiture'.
Lesson 1

Describing types of line and shape used in SS artist work (Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon)
Timed blind and continuous line drawings of peers, reviewing work through evaluating media used

Describing types of line and shape used in SS artist work (Austin Kleon and Mick Burton)
Timed ink on an elongated drawing tool and hidden surface drawings of peers, reviewing work through evaluating media used

Mapping the planes of the face

Refining self portrait details
Lesson 6

Learning about the history, traits and culture behind African masks

Students create a mask design by cutting up and collaging self portraits
Lesson 7 & 8

Coptic binding all work made in the previous lessons to create a notebook
Lesson 9 & 10

Ceramics keywords and definitions through constructive learning
Demonstrating clay rules and techniques
Students make their clay masks inspired by their collaged design
Lesson 11

Learning about African colour theory and symbolism
Creating a line drawing of the clay mask before adding colour, annotating what the colour represents in the students' personality
Lesson 12

Learning about African pattern theory and symbolism
Adding pattern to a coloured in line drawing of the clay mask, annotating what the pattern represents in the students' personality
Calculating the selling price of their finished mask
Lesson 13

Painting ceramic mask, using design from previous lessons
Gallery walk, including artists showcase in which students attempt to sell their work to their peers
